I receive a lot of compliments on our girls’ modest swimsuits. It’s not that they are extra special, or necessarily made of an adorable fabric, it’s that they are modest girl swimsuits. There is something charming about seeing little girls dressed like little girls…cute, feminine, and modest. But mostly modest.
Why is it fashionable for little boys to be wearing long sleeve rashguards and knee-length board shorts, while at the same time we hypocritically entertain the view that it’s cute for little girls to be decked out in their underwear.?. Because, let’s be honest…bikinis really are just underwear – made out of a different fabric. Would we want our little girls (I’m not talking toddlers, but up to tweens, even teens) running about the beach or pool in their underwear? And are one-pieces with the same crotch cut any different?
In the last month we have spent hours and hours and hours (no joke) searching for modest girl swimsuits for our daughters, especially Emma (13, wears a 14/16 or junior 2ish). Hours on end. It is impossible to find anything in the stores! It was like looking for a needle in a haystack. This mom pretty much hates swimsuits right now. lol.
I’m not the only one that feels frustrated; every time that I post a remark about how difficult it is to find modest girl swimsuits, I get TONS of feedback from other moms looking for the same!
So, I’ve put together a list of the top sunwear companies that offer modest girl swimsuits for up to sizes 12 or 14. Whether you are looking for good coverage suits to cover for modesty reasons, or so you don’t have to slather your kids in toxic sunscreen, hopefully there will be something here your girls fall in love with. 🙂
These are listed in no particular order. I’ve included clickys for ease of finding, but none are affiliate links:
UV Skinz – this company was founded by a woman after her husband died of skin cancer at age 32, leaving behind her and 3 young sons. I love this company because ALL they sell is sunwear, so you don’t have to dig through pages of other items. Large selection, up to size 14 on their website (and some fun women’s too!). We have had a TON of these swimsuits over the years and have been very happy with them!
This website currently has a popup that offers you a 20% off coupon when you sign up for their email list.
*This brand is occasionally found at Costco: special prints just for Costco, only up to size 7, limited offering/season, around $19 – if you find them buy several! 🙂 Costco also carries their boy sets, which include longer swim trunks, with matching rashguards, which still buy for Caleb (probably only for another year or so 🙁 )
Coolibar.com carries both short and long sleeve rashguards, along with matching skorts, board shorts, skirted swim tights, and cute dress-style cover-ups. UPF50+, sizes 3m to 14/16! This company will often run a 15% off + free shipping popup for signing up for their email list – or check the top of the page for a coupon code (usually just free shipping). Coolibar has some wonderful prints that appeal more to Emma as she is getting older. 🙂
Tugasunwear.com offers several swim options, up to size 13/14, including short and long sleeved rashguards, with adorable matching skorts, fitted capris, and shorts (and even have women’s sunwear also!). They have cute matching hats in both brim and flap styles. All fabrics are UPF 50+ and chemical free. Shipping is free on orders over $49, but only $2.99 anyway, so very affordable!
*sign up for their email newsletter, and receive 20% off of your first order.
**Also, on this site, you will see a couple of tabs at the top of the website – the ‘SunBusters Kids’ has more/different rashguards/shorts/hats for girls swimwear. 🙂
CabanaLife.com is a company that offers limited rashguard sets with fitted shorts in sizes up to 14. These 50+ UV protection suits are adorable (LOVE this company’s classy prints), and you can even find them here and there in the US in some sporting goods stores. Often have matching mommy/family prints. Typically no coupon codes from this company, but they occasionally have sale suits.
Cooliesurf.com has SPF50 swimsuits and rashguard sets up to size 14. Made in the USA (some?all? not sure – I didn’t click on every single thing on the site. lol). Not a huge selection of modest bottoms; the ones they have are cute boyshorts sets, and the prints sure are lovely. lol.
SunEmporium.com also s few adorable rashguard and boyshort swim sets! Up to size 12/13, Size up for their email list and receive 10% off your order. Our family especially appreciates the companies that offer swim skort options. We’d love to find some one piece skirted swimsuits (like a race top with a mid thigh skirt), but haven’t had any luck finding this yet.
If you are looking for some of these brands at a discount, try Swimoutlet.com – it is an online store that carries everything swimwear. We sometimes get our suits there for cheaper – go to their site and search for the above brands. They won’t have the selection in styles or sizes, but you might find something you love. 🙂
Good luck in your modest swimsuit hunt – hopefully this will save you some time so you can spend more of it in the water! <3
