Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley Skyway drive…

While we were in Virginia, we spent a night at their James River State Park. It is a beautiful drive into the park. I love how we are starting to run into farms and cattle ranches.
James River SP was a very nice park, but we didn’t get a chance to explore much – it poured rain starting about an hour after we got there. We sat in the camper and played games and watched movies. The park had a small laundry area, so we also spent the afternoon and evening running back and forth to change out the laundry. 9 loads at 2 loads at a time = better than none :) I love it when I can do laundry at where ever we are parked even if it takes longer than going to a laundrymat!

The next morning we got up and went to Appomattox Court House National Park, and then it was on the road again. We drove to Waynesboro, VA yet on Friday. Waynesboro is located at the bottom of the Shenandoah Valley.

Saturday we drove the Shenandoah Valley Skyway. I figured that when we drove the Shenandoah ‘Valley’, that we would be driving along the bottom of a valley surrounded by mountains. The road is actually named the S.V.Skyway because it takes you along the ridge, and you get to look down into the draws and across the valleys on either side of the little mountain range. There we places where you are on the top of the ridge and can see for miles and miles out on both sides at the same time.

Spring has not reached the valley; most of the trees did not even have buds yet.

We stopped by the new visitor’s center, and then went just down the road to take a short, easy hike

It was REALLY easy going down 😉

The hike is only about a mile and a half round trip, and at the bottom is a pretty, little waterfall.

The little kids did really well, and Eli and Greg got in someexercise carrying Emma and Savanna part-way back up since it was pretty steep (and they were oh, so tired!)

The drive along theskyway would be breathtaking in the fall!

After our drive through the park, we stopped by the local Costco (Yeah! It felt like I hadn’t been to one in forever!), and picked up, among other groceries, pizzas for dinner. Then it was back to our home sweet home at the Waynesboro WalMart.

  1. You are in our old stomping grounds. We used to live in the Shenandoah Valley. It is beautiful there, isn’t it?
